“I’ve been in situations before in my career where you freeze … catch yourself looking at the ball and end up losing the game,” - Pau Gasol
They did not end up losing the game, fortunately, as they go on to defeat their rival since the beginning of great basketball, the Boston Celtics.
Kobe Bryant, who ended with 27 points, was silent on the first quarter, looking to pass and be a decoy rather than to shoot. While the two seven footers, Gasol (24 pts, 14 rebs) and Bynum (16 pts, 17 rebs) devastated the Celtics’ smaller front line down low.
It was an entertaining game as the teams dueled closely all throughout with neither of the two teams letting up. But it was Pau’s great presence of mind that earned the Lakers the win in the dying seconds of the overtime period.
“That shot that Ray Allen took was good, in my opinion, but Pau did not stop playing until he heard the horn, and he came up with the big block.” Lakers Head Coach Mike Brown commented during the post game interview.
Next stop: Madison Square Garden as they go on to face Melo and the rising Asian star Jeremy Lin
